(Also known as "Silicon Technology") The first issue of the Internet of Things Heroes feature interviews Daniel Russi Netto, co-founder of Brazil Internet of Things-SmartGreen, and rton HESS Jr., R&D director. SmartGreen is a company focusing on sustainable development of smart lighting and smart metering automation solutions. Its headquarter is located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It works closely with urban and public utility-related services through the use of Silicon Labs'

The plan is to deploy 200,000 smart street lights in Brazil by 2022. Although most of SmartGreen's customers are currently located in Brazil, Daniel and Airton shared their valuable insights, especially on the growth drivers that should be seen in municipal lighting and the potential for future smart city applications.

Daniel and Airton: SmartGreen was established in 2012 after a merger with another company called RadioTelecom. Now we have 35 employees. From the beginning, our goal was to provide customers with comprehensive IoT solutions, including hardware, communications, gateways, processing layers, and software and applications needed to manage devices.

Daniel and Airton: We have two main competitors. In terms of local market competition, although we face competition from some local start-ups, their technology is not as mature as our solutions, and they cannot scale to the level of equipment that SmarGreen can handle. In addition, we also encounter international competitors from time to time, but due to local pricing and technical barriers, these often face challenges when entering the Brazilian market.

Daniel and Airton: Compared with our competitors, we can run more devices in our mesh network by using the Zigbee 2.4GHz wireless standard and remain competitive in price. At the same time, we also maintain close contact with our customers. Most of our lighting customers have limited technical knowledge, so they rely heavily on our technical expertise. This dynamic helps us build strong customer relationships.

Daniel and Airton: We understand that some demands are driven by regulatory issues. However, we also see a lot of demands from city managers who are interested in using urban automation infrastructure to improve overall operations, and municipal lighting is a good starting point. City managers value energy conservation and reduce the workload of the fuel operation team.

Daniel and Airton: Our main intelligent lighting product is SGIP7, which replaces the photoelectric tube and provides the value of intelligent automation control for professional lighting equipment. We sell hardware, gateways and endpoints for street lighting projects, and provide SaaS suites, including software licensing, upgrades, cloud computing capabilities, and continuous technical support. Our requirements for network communication standards are very high. Even if the network fails for some reason, our equipment can continue to work and communicate with other sensors and equipment. Our products incorporate Silicon Labs' Zigbee mesh network solution, enabling sensors and devices to communicate with each other without a gateway.

Daniel and Airton: For smart metering, we sell two different endpoints-network adapter cards and smart meter modules to utilities. We have two types of modules for residential use, including external modules that connect to standard meters and modules for smart meters. Our smart meter module can remotely read the energy consumption of utilities, which reduces the need for utility workers to be sent to residents' homes to read data and open/close electrical connections.

Daniel and Airton: At present, we have seen significant growth in the smart lighting business, while the smart metering project is progressing slowly. The decision-making process of utilities is complex, and they are still waiting for the emergence of wireless standards for smart metering, so between this dynamic range and the space for reasonable supervision, projects may be delayed or slow to start. However, buyers of smart lighting do not care about technical standards, but focus on performance and cost-effectiveness. Of course, they want this technology to be certified, but smart lighting is not regulated like smart metering, so we see more activity and growth.

Daniel and Airton: We use Silicon Labs' Zigbee module, and recently decided to upgrade our integrated circuit module, and tested several other competing devices, and Silicon Labs' products still perform. Therefore, we plan to upgrade the MGM13PMighty Gecko Zigbee module from Silicon Labs in the near future. All along, Silicon Labs' wireless solutions have been very effective in product development in our market and have provided many benefits.

Zigbee will continue to be an agreement for our products. We have tested many different protocols in the past, but all encountered performance and cost issues. Zigbee's protocol and architecture, as well as the design advantages that can be matched with Silicon Labs' Bluetooth mesh network module, all help to bring reliable high performance, low power consumption and built-in security features, so it is very suitable for street lighting applications.

Daniel and Airton: We are excited about our energy management applications in the enterprise market and see huge potential in the future. Since our technology platform has been built into the infrastructure of many Brazilian cities, and the contract is long-term (lasting 20 to 30 years), we see a major development opportunity for the city's multi-service network. Our municipal customers hope to explore other automated services on our platform, such as using environmental, traffic and utility sensors to help them operate their cities more continuously and efficiently. Silicon Labs' wireless module solutions are helping to expand our SmartGreen customer products due to their cost-effective performance.
